Governor General Lord Auckland was responsible for the development of the road from Pankabarie to Darjeeling town in the year 1839.It had more than 300 bridges then. The Place where the hotel now stands was the Villa of Lord Auckland and was popularly known as “Auckland Villa”. The adjacent road was called “ Auckland Road”. This was the most favourite place for the British officials. Usually every evening the Lords, Dukes, Viceroys Generals would assemble at Auckland Villa for evening tea, snacks and ball dance. It was a fully wooden made structure, elegant and mammoth in design and full of British history.
With the passage of time, the villa got detoriated and was finally demolished in the year 2001. In its place today stands a modern Viceroy hotel with glimpses of the British era.
